Loan Terms

Equipment that is checked out from the Link is due back by the specified date – if you don’t return it by that date, you will incur fines. If you don’t return the equipment by 28 days after your equipment is due, you will be charged the replacement cost for that equipment.
No exceptions can be made.

To find the due date for your equipment, log into your library account at http://library.duke.edu/catalog/librarycard.  Any equipment that you have checked out from the Link (except for iPods) will show up here, just like a library book.

Note that most of our equipment is focused on academic uses and restricted to checkout by faculty and students only – this includes the flip kits and all of our hard-drive based camera kits. Staff are eligible to borrow some equipment, including tape-based camera kits and iPods. Staff who have questions about this policy or wish to request an exception to borrow equipment can email ddi-info@duke.edu for assistance.

Hours for the Service Desk can be found at http://www.oit.duke.edu/about/contact/svc_desk_hours.php – equipment must be returned during Service Desk circulation hours as noted on the website.

You’ll be notified via email about the due date. If the iPod isn’t returned by the due date you receive in the email (which varies
based on timing of the end of the semester,) your bursar account will be charged for the replacement cost of the iPod, which is $250.
No exceptions can be made.

iPad2

A limited quantity of iPads are available from the Link for a 7-day loan. iPads must be returned for 24 hours before they can be checked out again. The Link reserves the right to not check out an iPad to a customer or group of customers if it appears that they are attempting to monopolize the iPad and not make it available for others to check out.

You’ll receive a courtesy notice 4 days before your equipment is due. Immediately after the due date/time, you’ll start accruing fines at the rate of 1 dollar per hour ($24 per day.) You’ll be notified via the email account you have on record with the Library 3 times when your equipment is overdue – 3 days after the due date, 7 days after the due date, and 21 days after the due date. On the 28th day, you will be charged for the replacement cost of the equipment, and the Link will not accept the equipment when returned.”

Renewing equipment

DDI equipment is not renewable in the usual sense (borrowers can not renew online through the library system). Borrowers who wish to extend their due date must come in person with their equipment to the Link Service Desk before the original due date. Borrowers may check-in and then check-out again the equipment, with the following exceptions:

  1. Due to the demand of the high definition camcorders, there is a 24 hour waiting period to renew a loan. The camera will not be held in reserve during your waiting period and there is no guarantee it will be available for you when you return to check it out again.
  2. Other equipment (Flip cameras, iPods, miniDV cameras, headsets, tripods, etc.) may also have a 24 hour waiting period, if equipment supplies are low enough when the equipment is returned.

In other words, “renewing” equipment is not guaranteed in any case, for any borrower, but is dependent on equipment availability.

NOTE: Borrowers who attempt to “renew” equipment AFTER the original due date will be charged late fees from the original due date to the “renewal” date.
